Student Visas in Chile
Studying there, and whether study leads to residency
Chile issues a student category of temporary residence for people enrolled at recognised schools, universities, and technical institutes. Like the other categories it is normally applied for at a consulate before travelling, and it carries limited rather than general work rights.
| Category | Temporary residence for study source |
| Evidence required | Enrolment or admission from a recognised institution |
| Duration | Commonly aligned to the course, renewable while studies continue |
| Work | Restricted; permission tied to the studies rather than open employment |
What the category requires
- Proof of admission or enrolment at an institution recognised by the Chilean state.
- Evidence of means to support the period of study, commonly through a scholarship, family support, or savings.
- Health cover for the duration of the stay.
- The standard civil documents — passport, criminal record certificate, and, where relevant, legalised or apostilled academic records.
Studying and then staying
A student permit is not by itself a route to permanent residence, but time held as a legal resident counts toward the residence history that later applications are assessed against.
Graduates of Chilean institutions commonly move across into a professional or technical qualification category, or into an employment-based permit, rather than extending the student permit indefinitely. The transition is a fresh application under the applicable rules, not an automatic conversion.
Recognition of foreign degrees
Degrees earned abroad generally require revalidation or recognition before they can be used for regulated professions in Chile. The process runs through the university system and can be slow, so it is commonly started well before it is needed.
For unregulated work, employers may accept a foreign degree at face value; for medicine, law, and other licensed fields they cannot.
