Studying there, and whether study leads to residency

Study in France runs through Campus France for applicants from a long list of countries, and the resulting long-stay student visa is again a VLS-TS validated online after arrival. Tuition at public universities is fixed by ministerial order and remains low by Anglophone standards even at the higher non-EU rates, and graduates of French institutions gain both work rights and a shortened naturalisation clock.

How the application is structured

• Applicants resident in a country covered by the Etudes en France procedure create a Campus France file, list their programme choices, and attend an interview before any consular step.
• An acceptance or pre-registration from the institution follows, and only then does the visa application open on France-Visas.
• Proof of financial means for the year is required, commonly benchmarked to a monthly amount in the region of EUR 615.
• Accommodation evidence and, for some profiles, evidence of French language ability are requested.
• After arrival the VLS-TS is validated online, and student social security registration is completed separately.

Tuition and the differentiated rates

Public university fees in France are set by the state rather than by the institution, which is why the headline figures are a fraction of British, American, or Australian equivalents. Differentiated rates for non-EU students were introduced, but a large number of institutions apply exemptions or partial reductions, and doctoral and some master's programmes are treated differently again.

Grandes ecoles and private business schools sit outside this logic entirely and charge commercial fees. The gap between a public university and a private school is the single largest variable in a French study budget.

After graduation

Graduates at master's level and above can generally apply for a temporary residence authorisation that permits job search or the launch of a business, and can convert to a work or passeport talent status without leaving the country.

The more significant long-term effect is on nationality: applicants who have successfully completed at least two years of higher education in France leading to a French qualification fall within the reduced residence requirement for naturalisation, discussed under citizenship below.

Language of instruction

English-taught master's programmes have expanded considerably in business, engineering, and the sciences, but undergraduate teaching remains overwhelmingly in French, and administrative life around the university is conducted in French regardless of the language of the course.
