Student Visas in Malta
Studying there, and whether study leads to residency
Malta issues a study visa and residence permit on the strength of an acceptance letter from a licensed institution, proof of funds, accommodation and health insurance. Alongside the University of Malta and the vocational college there is an unusually large English-language school sector, which brings tens of thousands of short-stay students each year and shapes how the authorities treat study applications generally.

What an application normally contains
- An acceptance or enrolment letter from an institution licensed by the national further and higher education authority.
- Evidence of sufficient means for the duration of the course, including tuition already paid where applicable.
- Confirmed accommodation in Malta, which for language school students is frequently arranged by the school itself.
- Health insurance valid in Malta for the whole period.
- A police conduct certificate from the country of residence, and biometric enrolment after arrival.
The English-language school sector
Malta hosts a substantial industry of accredited English-language schools, drawing students from across Europe, Asia, South America and the Gulf. The sector is licensed and inspected, and it is a meaningful part of the tourism economy.
Because short courses have historically been used as a means of entry, applications from some nationalities receive close scrutiny, and consistency between the course length, the funds shown and the stated purpose matters more than the paperwork alone.
After graduation
There is no automatic long post-study work permission of the kind offered by several larger countries. A graduate who finds employment converts to an employer-linked permit through the normal process, with the qualification helping principally through the specialist route.
Study time is residence, and it counts toward the long residence periods discussed under permanent residency and citizenship, but the discretion applied at the naturalisation stage means it should not be treated as a guaranteed clock.
