Cost of Living in Mexico
What a month actually costs, with rent and salary context
Mexico costs roughly a third to a half of the United States for an equivalent lifestyle, but the gap has narrowed sharply in the expatriate hubs. Mexico City, San Miguel de Allende, Playa del Carmen and Tulum now price in dollars; the rest of the country does not.

What is genuinely cheap and what is not
Cheap: rent outside the hubs, domestic help, restaurant meals, public transport, dentistry, medical consultations, produce, and property taxes, which are trivially low by North American standards.
Not cheap: imported goods, cars, electronics, wine, air conditioning in the Yucatan summer, and any product marketed to foreigners. Anything sold in an area with a large expatriate population converges quickly on United States pricing.
The tax dimension
Mexican tax residency is triggered by having your home and centre of vital interests here, not by your immigration status. Residents are taxed on worldwide income, at progressive rates.
Americans continue to file with the IRS regardless, and the foreign earned income exclusion and foreign tax credit determine what is actually owed. This interaction is genuinely complex and is one of the few areas where paying a cross-border accountant is unambiguously worth it.
