Permanent Residency in Morocco

The routes to a long-term, renewable status

Morocco does not grant permanent residence in the European sense. What exists is a renewable residence card, commonly issued for one year at first and for longer periods thereafter, and a ten-year registration card available after a qualifying period of continuous regular residence. The ten-year card is renewable, not permanent.

What the ten-year card is and is not

The ten-year registration card is the closest thing Morocco offers to settled status. It is granted, on application and at the discretion of the authorities, to foreigners who have completed a qualifying period of continuous regular residence and who meet the ordinary conditions of means, accommodation and clean record.

It is a longer renewal cycle rather than an unconditional right of abode. It can be refused, and it does not carry the automatic access to nationality that long-term residence carries in several European systems.

Keeping the clock intact

Property is not a residence route

Buying property does not confer residence. Morocco has no published investor or golden visa category comparable with those in southern Europe, and ownership of a house is at most supporting evidence of accommodation within an ordinary residence file.

Foreigners may acquire urban and built property, including apartments and houses inside city perimeters, and register it in their own name. Agricultural land is the significant exclusion and cannot be acquired by foreigners, which affects rural plots and farmland outside the urban perimeter.

Important. This publication is general information about publicly available immigration rules. It is not legal advice, it is not tailored to any individual's circumstances, and reading it does not create a lawyer-client or consultant-client relationship.

We do not assess eligibility, review documents, complete forms, or represent anyone before any government. Paid immigration advice and representation are regulated activities in many countries (for example the College of Immigration and Citizenship Consultants and provincial law societies in Canada, registered migration agents under the OMARA scheme in Australia, OISC-regulated advisers in the United Kingdom, and licensed attorneys in the United States). If you need advice about your own case, consult a licensed professional in the relevant country.
