Student Visas in United Arab Emirates
Studying there, and whether study leads to residency
Students are sponsored either by the university they attend or by a parent already resident in the country, and the permit lasts for the duration of the programme with annual renewal. Study does not create a settlement clock: there is nothing to accumulate toward permanent residence. What does exist is a distinct recognition route, since outstanding students and graduates with high grades from listed institutions fall within one of the Golden Visa categories.
| Sponsor | The educational institution, or a resident parent source |
| Typical permit length | Commonly one year, renewed for the length of the programme |
| Required steps | Medical fitness test, health insurance, Emirates ID |
| Long-term option | Outstanding students may fall within a Golden Visa category source |
Who sponsors a student
A university, college, or accredited institute licensed in the country can sponsor the residence of its enrolled students, and this is the standard arrangement for people arriving specifically to study. Institutions inside free zones such as the academic zones in Dubai sponsor through their own free zone authority.
A child of a resident parent normally remains on family sponsorship while studying, subject to the age rules that apply to dependants. Sons commonly cease to be eligible as dependants after a published age threshold unless they are enrolled in study, which is the point at which many families switch to institutional sponsorship.
What the permit does and does not allow
- It permits residence for the duration of the course, with renewal each academic year on proof of continued enrolment.
- Working during study is not automatic; internships and part-time work generally require a separate permit obtained through the employer or training provider.
- It does not accumulate toward permanent residence or naturalisation, because neither is available on the basis of time spent in the country.
- It ends when enrolment ends, after which the person needs a different sponsor to remain.
The graduate route that does exist
The long-term residence framework includes categories for outstanding students and graduates. These are described in terms of academic performance — high secondary school grades, or a strong grade point average from a university on a recognised list — rather than as a general post-study work permit.
This is a recognition scheme rather than an entitlement, and the published criteria are specific. Most graduates who stay do so by finding an employer to sponsor them in the ordinary way.
Costs to plan for
Tuition at the international branch campuses is set in dirhams but priced against the home institution, and is not subsidised for foreign residents. Beyond tuition, the recurring items are the annual permit renewal, the medical fitness test, the Emirates ID, and health insurance, which is mandatory in Dubai and Abu Dhabi and must be in place before a permit is issued.
