Work Visas in United Kingdom

How to get a work permit and which routes actually exist

The United Kingdom has no general labour-market work visa. The main route, the Skilled Worker visa, requires a job offer from an employer that holds a Home Office sponsor licence, at or above a published skill level and a salary threshold that was raised sharply in 2024. The routes that avoid sponsorship — Global Talent, High Potential Individual, Innovator Founder and the Youth Mobility Scheme — are narrow, but they are the ones that let an applicant move without an employer's cooperation.

The sponsorship system is the whole system

For ordinary employment the applicant is not the primary applicant in any practical sense. An employer applies to the Home Office for a sponsor licence, is inspected, and once licensed may assign certificates of sponsorship against defined roles. Only then can a worker apply.

The Home Office publishes a register of licensed sponsors. Checking whether a prospective employer appears on it, and in which route, is the single most useful piece of research an applicant can do before an interview, because an unlicensed employer would have to obtain a licence — a process taking weeks or months and carrying a fee and ongoing compliance duties that many small firms decline.

Sponsorship ties the visa to the job. Changing employer generally requires a new certificate of sponsorship and a new application, and losing the job curtails the permission after a short grace period.

The 2024 salary increases

In April 2024 the general salary threshold for the Skilled Worker route was raised steeply, commonly reported as moving from around GBP 26,200 to roughly GBP 38,700, alongside increases in occupation-specific going rates. Discounted thresholds remain for new entrants, for some health and education occupations covered by national pay scales, and for people on specified transitional arrangements.

The effect was uneven rather than uniform. Senior roles in London were largely unaffected; junior, regional and lower-paid professional roles frequently fell below the line. Because the applicable figure is the higher of the general threshold and the occupation's going rate, two people with identical salaries can reach opposite outcomes depending on occupation code.

The separate route for care workers was tightened at the same time, including restrictions on dependants, after widespread concern about the sector.

Routes that do not require an employer

Approximate government charges for a sponsored worker

ItemApproximate cost (GBP)
Skilled Worker visa fee, three years, applying from abroadaround 750 to 800
Skilled Worker visa fee, over three years, applying from abroadaround 1,500
Immigration Health Surcharge, adultaround 1,035 per year of permission
Immigration Health Surcharge, child or studentaround 776 per year of permission
Immigration Skills Charge, paid by the employeraround 364 to 1,000 per year
Priority processing, optionalaround 500

Why the total is so much larger than the headline fee

The Immigration Health Surcharge is charged for the whole period of permission, in advance, at the point of application, and separately for every member of the family including children. A five-year permission for two adults and two children therefore attracts a surcharge bill running well into five figures before the visa fees are counted.

There is no instalment option and no refund for years not used, other than where an application is refused or withdrawn. Applicants who cannot fund the full amount at the point of application sometimes apply for a shorter period and extend later, which spreads the cost but adds a further application fee and further legal risk.
