Finding a Job in Vietnam
The job market, in-demand fields, and how hiring works
Foreign employment is concentrated in a few sectors: management and engineering inside foreign-invested manufacturing, English language teaching, technology, and hospitality. Hiring runs through the employer because the employer carries the permit obligation, so the job search is in effect a search for a company already willing and able to sponsor.

Where the jobs are
- Foreign-invested manufacturing. Electronics, footwear, textiles and components moved production to Vietnam at scale, and foreign plant managers, quality engineers and supply chain specialists are recruited into it, mainly in the industrial provinces around Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and Hai Phong.
- English teaching. The largest single employer of foreigners by headcount, spread across language centres, private schools and international schools, with the qualification bar rising steadily.
- Technology. Software services and product companies in Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi and Da Nang hire foreign engineers and managers, though most engineering headcount is local.
- Hospitality and tourism. Hotel and resort management along the coast, with seasonal and property-cycle sensitivity.
Why the employer matters more than the candidate
Because the employer must first obtain approval to use a foreign worker in a named position and then support the permit and the residence card, small local companies frequently decline to hire foreigners at all rather than take on the process. The realistic employer set is foreign-invested companies, established language and school groups, and larger Vietnamese firms with a compliance department.
The consequence for a job search is that filtering by employer type is more productive than filtering by role. A perfect match at a company that has never sponsored anyone usually goes nowhere.
How the paperwork is actually done
Most files are prepared by the employer's administrative staff or by an agent retained for the purpose, and the candidate's role is largely to supply legalised documents on time. This is convenient and it is also a loss of control: applicants frequently do not see what has been filed on their behalf.
Keeping personal copies of the degree, the criminal record certificate, the medical certificate, the work permit and the residence card, and knowing the expiry dates independently of the employer, is the single most useful precaution, because a lapse in the permit unwinds the residence card as well.
Property, for those thinking further ahead
Foreigners cannot own land in Vietnam; land is held by the state with use rights allocated to citizens and organisations. Foreign individuals may own apartments in eligible projects, subject to a quota limiting the share of units in any one building and project, and ownership is granted for a fixed term rather than in perpetuity, with renewal provided for in the legislation.
This matters to the employment decision because it removes the usual assumption that a long stay eventually becomes a property purchase and a settled base. A long Vietnamese career is compatible with renting for its whole duration.
