Family & Spouse Visas in Cyprus
Sponsoring a partner, children, or parents
Family reunification for third-country nationals follows the European Union framework: a sponsor with a qualifying residence permit and sufficient income, accommodation and insurance may bring a spouse and minor children, usually after a qualifying period of lawful residence. Dependants generally receive residence without the right to work, with the important exception of family members of employees admitted under the Business Facilitation Unit scheme, who are permitted to work.
| Who qualifies | Spouse and minor unmarried children of the sponsor source |
| Sponsor conditions | Lawful residence, stable income, accommodation and health insurance |
| Qualifying period | Commonly around two years of lawful residence before reunification |
| Work rights of dependants | Generally not granted, except for family of Business Facilitation Unit employees |
| EU citizens' families | Lighter free-movement regime, not the third-country procedure |
The ordinary procedure
The sponsor applies in Cyprus to the Civil Registry and Migration Department, evidencing the relationship with legalised and translated civil documents, and evidencing income, housing of adequate size and health insurance for the family. Approval then allows the family member to obtain an entry visa and, after arrival, a residence permit aligned with the sponsor's own.
Certain permit holders are excluded from family reunification altogether, including students and holders of short-term or seasonal permits. Sponsors should confirm that their own permit category admits reunification before making commitments abroad.
Why the Business Facilitation Unit matters for families
Under the ordinary rules a reunited spouse receives residence but not permission to work, which for dual-career households is often the decisive drawback of moving to Cyprus.
Family members of third-country nationals employed by companies of foreign interest under the Business Facilitation Unit scheme are permitted to take employment. That difference frequently determines whether a household finds the move viable, and it is worth establishing which category an offer falls into before accepting it.
Family members of European Union citizens
Where the sponsor is a citizen of another member state exercising free movement rights in Cyprus, the free-movement regime applies instead, with lighter documentation, no income threshold of the same kind, and an immediate right of the spouse to work. The third-country reunification procedure described above should not be followed in that case.
