Student Visas in Cyprus
Studying there, and whether study leads to residency
Students from outside the European Union apply for a student entry visa on the basis of an acceptance from a recognised institution, prove tuition and maintenance funds, and register for a temporary residence permit after arrival. Work rights during study are limited to listed sectors and a restricted number of hours, and student residence is treated as a temporary purpose rather than a settlement track.

What the application involves
- An acceptance letter from an institution recognised by the Ministry of Education, Sport and Youth.
- Evidence of tuition paid or secured, and of maintenance funds for the academic year.
- Medical certificates and health insurance cover.
- A clean criminal record certificate, and in most cases a bank guarantee held for the duration of study.
- Registration with the Civil Registry and Migration Department shortly after arrival, to convert the entry visa into a residence permit.
Studying in English
Cyprus has both public universities, where much undergraduate teaching is in Greek, and a substantial private university sector that teaches largely in English and recruits internationally. Fees at the private institutions are moderate by British or American standards but are not nominal.
Degrees from recognised Cypriot institutions are recognised across the European Union, which is a large part of the appeal for students who intend to work elsewhere in the union afterwards.
What study does and does not lead to
Student residence is granted for a temporary purpose. It does not create an entitlement to remain after graduation, and there is no broad post-study work permit comparable to those in Canada or the United Kingdom; graduates who wish to stay generally need an employer to obtain an employment permit, or to qualify under the Business Facilitation Unit categories through a company of foreign interest.
Time spent in the country as a student is also treated differently from ordinary residence when long-term status and naturalisation are assessed, and it is commonly discounted or excluded. Anyone planning a long path to settlement should confirm how their study years will be counted before assuming they contribute in full.
