Family & Spouse Visas in Greece
Sponsoring a partner, children, or parents
Legal residents may reunite a spouse and minor children after a qualifying period, with income and housing tests. Family members of Greek and EU citizens are treated under the lighter European regime, and spouses of Greeks may naturalise in three years.
| Sponsor requirement | Generally 2 years of lawful residence, with exceptions |
| Who qualifies | Spouse over 18, minor unmarried children |
| Income test | Benchmarked to a published minimum, increased per family member |
| Work rights | Family members may work |
| Spouse of a Greek citizen | Naturalisation after 3 years of marriage and residence |
Third-country sponsors
A non-EU resident must generally have held a residence permit for a qualifying period, show stable income above a published threshold that rises with each family member, hold health insurance, and demonstrate suitable accommodation. Approval produces an entry visa for the family member and then a permit matching the sponsor's.
Investor permit holders, including golden visa holders, may include a spouse, children under twenty-one, and the parents of both spouses — an unusually broad family inclusion.
Family of EU and Greek citizens
The community regime applies, with lighter requirements and a residence card rather than a third-country permit. Spouses of Greek citizens may apply for naturalisation after three years of marriage and residence, or sooner where there are children, though the language and civics requirements still apply.
Documents
Marriage and birth certificates must be apostilled and officially translated into Greek, and Greek authorities apply validity windows to civil status documents. Order them late and keep certified copies, because originals are frequently retained.
