Sponsoring a partner, children, or parents
An Indonesian citizen may sponsor a foreign spouse and their children for a limited stay permit, and a foreign KITAS holder may sponsor dependants on a permit tied to their own. The spouse route is the most generous category in the system, because it leads to permanent stay considerably faster than any employment route.

Marrying an Indonesian citizen
A foreign spouse is sponsored by the Indonesian partner rather than by an employer, which removes the placement plan and the levy from the picture entirely. The permit is renewable and, after a period of continuous marriage and residence, can be converted into a permanent stay permit.
A marriage conducted abroad is normally reported to the Indonesian authorities so that it is recognised domestically. Where that reporting is skipped, later applications that depend on proving the marriage become difficult.
Working as a sponsored spouse
A permit issued on the basis of marriage is a residence permit, not a work authorisation. Foreign spouses who intend to be employed generally still require employment sponsorship, although the position of a spouse who is self-employed or who works in a family business has been treated more flexibly in practice than the strict text suggests.
Because practice and text diverge here, this is one of the areas where relying on informal accounts is riskiest.
Property and the marital estate
- Foreigners cannot hold freehold title. Marriage to an Indonesian does not change that.
- Where a couple has no prenuptial agreement separating assets, property acquired during the marriage may be treated as jointly held, which can jeopardise the Indonesian spouse's ability to hold freehold title.
- A prenuptial or postnuptial separation-of-assets agreement is the customary structure used to preserve the Indonesian spouse's title.
- Right-of-use arrangements remain available to the foreign spouse in their own name, within the published duration limits.
Children
Children of a mixed marriage may hold a limited form of dual nationality during childhood under the 2006 citizenship framework, and are required to elect one nationality on reaching adulthood within a defined window. Missing that window has consequences that are not easily reversed.
