Student Visas in Qatar
Studying there, and whether study leads to residency
Students are sponsored by the university or institute that admitted them rather than by an employer, and the permit lasts for the duration of the programme. Study does not create a route to permanent residence or citizenship, and graduates who wish to stay must be hired by an employer willing to sponsor a work residence permit in the ordinary way.

How the student route works
- Admission comes first. The institution applies for the entry visa and then the residence permit once you have arrived and completed the medical examination.
- The permit is tied to continued enrolment. Withdrawal, suspension or completion of the programme ends the basis for it.
- Health insurance is required in the same way as for other residents, and institutions commonly arrange a policy as part of enrolment.
- Working while studying is restricted and requires permission; it is not an automatic entitlement attached to the student permit.
What study does not lead to
In most destination countries a degree is a step toward settlement. In Qatar it is not. Years spent as a student do not create an entitlement to permanent residence, and there is no published points system in which a local qualification carries weight.
The practical value of studying in Qatar is the qualification itself and the local network, which can make an employer more willing to sponsor. That is a labour market advantage rather than an immigration one, and it is worth separating the two when planning.
Cost and language
Tuition varies enormously between the national university and the international branch campuses, where fees are commonly set at or near the level charged by the home institution. Scholarships are published by individual institutions rather than centrally.
Teaching in the branch campuses and in most postgraduate programmes is in English. Arabic is required in some faculties at the national university, and the requirement is programme-specific rather than uniform.
