Cost of Living in Costa Rica
What a month actually costs, with rent and salary context
Costa Rica costs more than its neighbours and more than most people expect: imported goods carry heavy duties, vehicles are extraordinarily expensive, and coastal expatriate towns price in dollars. The Central Valley, where most Costa Ricans live, is far cheaper than the beaches.
| Currency risk | The colon has been strong against the dollar, raising dollar costs source |
| 1-bed rent, Central Valley | Roughly USD 500–900 |
| 1-bed rent, Guanacaste or Manuel Antonio | Roughly USD 900–1,800 |
| Vehicle import duty | Very high; used cars cost far more than in North America |
| VAT | 13% |
Monthly budget, one person
| Item | Central Valley (USD) | Coastal town (USD) |
|---|---|---|
| Rent, 1-bedroom | 700 | 1,300 |
| Utilities and internet | 110 | 190 |
| Groceries | 400 | 480 |
| Transport | 80 | 150 |
| CAJA contribution | 120 | 120 |
| Total before discretionary spending | 1,410 | 2,240 |
Where the money goes that you did not plan for
- Cars. Import duties push prices far above North American levels, and a used vehicle here costs what a much newer one costs at home.
- Imported groceries. Local produce, coffee and beans are cheap. Anything imported, including most packaged food, is not.
- Electricity. Modest in the highlands, substantial on the coast where air conditioning runs constantly.
- Coastal premium. Guanacaste and the Pacific resort towns are priced for tourists and foreign buyers, and a beach lifestyle costs roughly double the same life in the Central Valley.
Tax
Costa Rica taxes territorially: income earned outside the country is generally not taxed here. That is the single biggest financial argument for the country and the reason retirees and remote workers do well.
Locally-sourced income is taxed progressively, property tax is low, and a separate luxury home tax applies above a value threshold. Americans still file with the IRS regardless.
