Family & Spouse Visas in Costa Rica
Sponsoring a partner, children, or parents
Family ties are the strongest route in Costa Rica: the spouse and parents of a Costa Rican citizen, and the parents of a Costa Rican child, receive permanent residency directly with full work rights, bypassing the usual three-year wait.
| Spouse of a citizen | Permanent residency, subject to proof of a genuine marriage |
| Parent of a Costa Rican child | Permanent residency, with work rights |
| Family of a temporary resident | Dependent temporary residency |
| Naturalisation after marriage | 2 years of marriage and residency |
Birth in Costa Rica
Costa Rica grants citizenship by birth on its territory. The parents of a Costa Rican child qualify for permanent residency, which carries full work rights immediately. Alongside marriage, this is the fastest route to settled status in the country.
Marriage
The spouse of a Costa Rican citizen is granted permanent residency, but the migration authority scrutinises the relationship, may interview both parties, and reviews the file again at renewal. Documentation of a shared life matters more than the certificate.
Naturalisation follows after two years of marriage combined with residency, which is far shorter than the seven years required otherwise.
Dependants of temporary residents
A pensionado or rentista may include a spouse and children under eighteen, or under twenty-five if studying. Dependants inherit the sponsor's restrictions, including the prohibition on employment, and the sponsor's income requirement rises for each dependant included.
