Family & Spouse Visas in Hungary
Sponsoring a partner, children, or parents
Family reunification exists for spouses, minor children and, on narrower grounds, dependent parents of a third-country national who already holds a Hungarian residence title. The sponsor must show stable income, accommodation and health insurance for the whole household. The 2024 law also drew sharper lines about which sponsors may bring family at all, and holders of the guest worker permit are largely excluded.
| Permit type | Residence permit for family reunification source |
| Eligible sponsors | Holders of most, but not all, residence titles |
| Core requirements | Accommodation, subsistence, health insurance |
| Family of Hungarian citizens | Separate and generally more favourable treatment source |
Who may be brought
- A spouse, where the marriage is genuine and, in most cases, was concluded before the sponsor's stay began or has subsisted for a meaningful period.
- Minor children of the sponsor or the spouse, including adopted children, where custody arrangements permit the move.
- Dependent parents, on narrower conditions relating to care and to the absence of support in the country of origin.
- In restricted circumstances, other dependent relatives where the authority accepts the dependency.
What the sponsor must demonstrate
The recurring requirements are accommodation adequate for the size of the household, income sufficient to support every member without recourse to public funds, and health insurance covering the whole family. Documentary standards are exacting and originals with certified translations are commonly required.
Where the sponsor's own title is short or restricted, the family permit is generally granted only for the remaining validity of that title, so the household's status is no more secure than the sponsor's.
The exclusions introduced in 2024
The new act deliberately separates categories in which family life is contemplated from those in which it is not. The guest worker residence permit falls in the second group and family accompaniment is, as a rule, unavailable to its holders.
This is one of the more consequential differences between the named permits and another reason to establish which title an employer intends to use before relocating.
Family members of Hungarian and EEA citizens
Third-country family members of Hungarian citizens, and of European Economic Area nationals exercising free movement rights, are dealt with under separate and generally more favourable rules, including a distinct registration and residence card procedure. Guidance written for the third-country reunification route does not apply to them.
