Finding a Job in Hungary
The job market, in-demand fields, and how hiring works
English-language employment in Hungary is heavily concentrated in Budapest, where a long-established cluster of shared service and business process centres recruits multilingual staff for finance, procurement, IT support and customer operations across Europe. The second pillar is engineering and manufacturing, particularly automotive, around Győr, Kecskemét, Debrecen and Szentgotthárd. Outside these, working Hungarian is usually a practical requirement.

The shared services cluster
Budapest has hosted regional service centres for large multinationals for well over two decades, and the working language in these organisations is normally English. Roles cluster in accounting and finance operations, procurement, human resources administration, supply chain, IT service management and multilingual customer support.
A second European language is often worth more than seniority in these recruitments, since the centres serve markets across the continent. German, French, Dutch and the Nordic languages command noticeable premiums.
Engineering and manufacturing
Automotive assembly and component manufacturing form a large share of Hungarian industrial output and employment, with substantial German and Japanese investment and, more recently, battery manufacturing. Engineering roles in these plants are open to foreign candidates, though production and supervisory positions generally require Hungarian.
Recruitment for these employers increasingly runs through the guest worker arrangements, which is precisely where the difference between permit categories becomes material to the candidate.
How hiring works
- Employers initiate the work authorisation, so a candidate cannot arrange it independently and should confirm early which permit will be requested.
- CVs follow the European convention: two pages, factual, with language levels stated against the Common European Framework.
- Recognition of foreign diplomas is handled through a designated national body and is required for regulated professions such as medicine, law, teaching and several engineering fields.
- Salary is normally negotiated as a gross monthly figure; the flat income tax makes the net calculation unusually predictable.
- Notice periods and probationary terms are set by the labour code and are shorter than in much of Western Europe.
Learning the language
Hungarian is unrelated to the Indo-European languages and is generally classed among the harder languages for English speakers. It is not required for the Budapest corporate cluster and is effectively required for almost everything else, including public administration, healthcare access outside private clinics and the naturalisation examination.
Foreigners who intend to stay permanently rather than for a posting tend to conclude that the investment is unavoidable, and to start earlier than they had planned.
