Student Visas in Hungary
Studying there, and whether study leads to residency
Hungary has built study into an instrument of foreign policy. The Stipendium Hungaricum programme funds several thousand foreign students a year through bilateral agreements, and the English-taught medical, dental and veterinary programmes have drawn international students for decades. A residence permit for study purposes is comparatively straightforward to obtain, but it is a temporary title and the route from graduation to long-term residence is narrower than in several neighbouring countries.

What an application requires
- Admission to a recognised Hungarian higher education institution, evidenced by a formal letter or certificate of enrolment.
- Proof of accommodation for the period of study, whether a dormitory place or a private lease.
- Evidence of sufficient means to cover living costs and, where relevant, tuition.
- Comprehensive health insurance valid in Hungary, either through social insurance arrangements or a private policy.
- A valid travel document covering the intended period of stay with a margin.
Stipendium Hungaricum
The scholarship is administered through intergovernmental agreements with a large number of partner countries, and applications are usually routed through the sending country's own nominating authority rather than directly to the university.
The award typically covers tuition, a monthly stipend, dormitory or housing contribution and medical insurance. Competition is heavy in the more popular fields, and nomination by the sending state is the practical bottleneck rather than the Hungarian side of the process.
The medical programmes
Semmelweis University, the University of Debrecen, the University of Pécs and the University of Szeged have run English-taught medical, dental and pharmacy degrees for a long period, and the fees are moderate against comparable Western European or North American programmes. The qualifications are recognised across the European Union, which is the main reason for their international intake.
Attrition in the first two years is high, and the programmes are academically demanding rather than a soft route to a European degree.
After graduation
The residence permit for study purposes is temporary by design and expires with the programme. Moving into work generally means a fresh application under one of the employment categories rather than an automatic extension, and the study period does not carry the weight toward settlement that some applicants assume.
Graduates who intend to remain should treat the transition as a separate immigration step to be arranged in advance of the final semester, not as an administrative formality afterwards.
