Cost of Living in India
What a month actually costs, with rent and salary context
India is inexpensive by any international comparison, and the gap between costs and local salaries is the defining feature. Foreign income goes very far, particularly outside the central districts of Mumbai and Delhi, while a salary paid on Indian terms supports a markedly different standard of living.
| General level | Very low against western European or North American income |
| Most expensive cities | Mumbai and central Delhi, then Bengaluru and Gurugram |
| Domestic help | Commonly employed by middle-income households, at low cost |
| Income tax | Progressive, with an older and a newer regime to choose between source |
An indicative monthly outline for one person
| Item | Mumbai (INR) | Smaller metro (INR) |
|---|---|---|
| Rent, one-bedroom in a central district | 55,000 | 22,000 |
| Utilities and internet | 5,000 | 4,000 |
| Groceries | 12,000 | 9,000 |
| Local transport | 4,000 | 3,000 |
| Mobile and data | 500 | 500 |
| Indicative total before discretionary spending | 76,500 | 38,500 |
What the averages conceal
Housing is the whole story. Rents in south Mumbai, central Delhi and the newer business districts of Gurugram and Bengaluru approach international levels, while comparable accommodation in Pune, Hyderabad, Chennai, Kochi or Ahmedabad costs a fraction of that.
Landlords commonly require a large advance deposit, and in parts of southern India the customary deposit has historically run to many months of rent. That single item is often the largest cash requirement of the first year.
Costs newcomers underestimate
- Deposits and agency commission on a first lease, payable before any salary arrives.
- Private health insurance and private schooling, both of which most foreign residents treat as necessities rather than options.
- Air purification and, in the north, the practical consequences of the winter smog season.
- Domestic power backup in cities where supply is interrupted, and the running cost of air conditioning through a long summer.
- Repeated FRRO-related costs: photographs, notarised documents, and time away from work.
Tax residence
Liability turns on days of presence rather than on visa category, and a person who spends a substantial part of the year in India commonly becomes tax resident. The Income Tax Department operates the filing portal directly and publishes the current slabs under both the older regime with deductions and the newer regime with lower rates and fewer of them.
