Family & Spouse Visas in India
Sponsoring a partner, children, or parents
India has no separate family settlement route. Spouses, children and other dependants of Indian citizens, OCI cardholders and foreign workers are admitted on the entry or X visa, which is the most common long-stay category in the country and is renewable without limit but never becomes permanent status.

The entry or X visa in practice
The X visa is the catch-all long-stay category for people whose connection to India is personal rather than commercial. It covers foreign spouses of Indian citizens, foreign spouses of OCI cardholders, people of Indian origin who do not hold or have not applied for an OCI card, and the dependent spouses and children of people holding employment, business, project or student visas.
It is commonly issued for periods of a year or more and is extendable inside India through the FRRO. Because it is the route most families actually use, the great majority of long-term foreign residents in India are X visa holders rather than employment visa holders.
Its limits
- It confers no right to work. A spouse who wishes to take a job needs an employment visa in their own name, subject to the same salary floor.
- It does not accumulate towards any status. Ten years on an X visa produces the same legal position as one year.
- It remains dependent on the underlying relationship or on the principal visa holder's status.
- It must be maintained through repeated extensions, each requiring documentary proof of the marriage or dependency.
Why the OCI card usually supersedes it
Where the applicant qualifies — most commonly a foreign spouse of an Indian citizen or of an OCI cardholder after a qualifying period of marriage, or a person with an Indian parent, grandparent or great-grandparent — the Overseas Citizen of India card replaces the entire cycle of visas and registrations with a lifelong document.
For that reason the X visa is often best understood as a holding position occupied while an OCI application is prepared, rather than as a long-term arrangement in its own right.
