Student Visas in India
Studying there, and whether study leads to residency
A student visa is granted on the strength of admission to a recognised Indian institution and is normally issued for the duration of the course. India actively recruits foreign students through a central admission portal, fees are low by international standards, and the visa does not carry a general right to work.
| Route | Student visa, on proof of admission to a recognised institution source |
| Central portal | Study in India, for admission to participating institutions source |
| Validity | Commonly for the duration of the course, up to around five years |
| Work rights | No general permission to work; internships require the correct category |
| Registration | FRRO registration commonly required for courses beyond a short duration source |
Getting admitted first
The visa follows the admission, not the other way round. Applicants need a provisional or final admission letter from an institution recognised by the relevant regulator, and the visa is normally endorsed with the name of the institution and the course.
The Study in India portal operated by the government consolidates participating universities and colleges, publishes fee ranges and administers a common application for many of them. Institutions outside that portal remain available, but the recognition status of the institution is what the visa officer examines.
What the student visa does and does not allow
- It permits full-time study on the named course at the named institution.
- It does not carry a general right to take paid employment alongside study.
- Changing institution or course commonly requires prior approval rather than notification after the fact.
- Research work in certain sensitive fields or locations is dealt with under a separate research visa and can require additional clearance.
- Family members accompanying a student are generally admitted on an entry or X visa dependent on the student's status.
After graduation
There is no automatic post-study work permission. A graduate who wishes to remain and work must qualify for an employment visa on its own terms, including the salary floor, or fall into one of the exempt categories such as teaching.
This is a structural difference from countries that treat study as the first step of a settlement pathway. In India, study is a purpose in itself, and completion of the course ends the basis of stay.
