Who is covered, from what date, and what insurance you need
Public hospitals are funded by the state and primarily serve Saudi nationals, while foreign residents are covered through employer-provided health insurance, which is a legal condition of employment and of residence permits for sponsored dependants. Care in the private sector is generally of a good standard in the large cities, and the scope of a policy varies considerably between employers.

How coverage is arranged
Employers are required to provide health insurance for foreign employees, and cover for sponsored dependants is required as a condition of issuing or renewing their residence permits. The policy is arranged through licensed insurers under a regulated framework that sets minimum benefits.
Coverage begins with the employment relationship and generally ends with it, which is worth noting when leaving a job. Minimum cover is defined, but employers commonly buy at different levels, so the annual limit, the hospital network, the treatment of maternity and chronic conditions, and the deductibles differ considerably between policies.
Public and private provision
- Public hospitals are operated by the Ministry of Health and other state bodies and primarily serve nationals, with emergency care available more broadly.
- A large private hospital sector serves insured foreign residents and much of the national population, concentrated in Riyadh, Jeddah and the Eastern Province.
- Several private hospital groups are internationally accredited, and specialist care in the major cities is generally regarded as competent.
- Provision is thinner outside the main urban centres, and complex cases are commonly referred to the large city hospitals.
- Pharmacies are widespread and many medicines are available at prices well below United States levels.
Practical points
Medical testing before or on entry is part of the residence permit process, and results affect the issuing of the iqama. Records from home should be brought in translated form where a chronic condition is being managed.
Policies frequently exclude or limit pre-existing conditions, and maternity cover often carries waiting periods. Where a family posting is being considered, reading the actual policy schedule rather than relying on a summary is the practical safeguard.
