Student Visas in Saudi Arabia
Studying there, and whether study leads to residency
Study visas are issued on the strength of an admission offer from a recognised Saudi institution, and the university generally acts as the sponsor for the residence permit that follows. A substantial scholarship system supports international students at several universities, particularly in Islamic studies, Arabic language, science and engineering, and study does not by itself lead toward permanent status.

How admission and the visa fit together
Applications are made directly to the institution, which issues an admission decision and initiates the visa authorisation. The student then applies at a Saudi mission abroad with attested academic documents, a medical certificate and, in many cases, a certificate of good conduct.
After arrival the institution completes medical testing and biometrics and arranges the iqama. The permit is tied to enrolment, so withdrawal, suspension or the end of the programme ends the basis for residence.
Scholarships and funded places
- Several universities operate scholarship programmes for international students that commonly cover tuition, accommodation and a monthly stipend.
- Islamic universities have long-standing international scholarship intakes in religious and Arabic-language disciplines.
- Research universities recruit internationally at postgraduate level in science and engineering, generally with funded places and English-language teaching.
- Terms differ substantially between institutions, and admission requirements, age limits and quotas by country are set individually.
Working and staying on
Employment rights for students are limited, and paid work generally requires the appropriate permit rather than following automatically from a study permit. Institutional rules should be checked before accepting any paid role.
There is no general post-study work permit of the kind found in several other countries. A graduate who wishes to remain normally needs an employer to sponsor a fresh work visa and iqama, which means the transition depends on the same quota and localisation rules that govern any other hire.
